When Reena isn't teaching students on NOLS courses in the Himalayas, she is achieving other fantastic dreams, like becoming the first Indian woman to ski to the South Pole.

Dedicated to leadership and wilderness education, the NOLS Podcast will feature interviews, stories, and Q & A's from experts around the NOLS world. The first episode is devoted to giving some insight into a career in outdoor education. We get this question all the time on our Facebook page, over the phone, or when we are at events throughout the country.

We have had a big week to start off the new year right. The NOLS Facebook page reached 9000 fans a few days ago. It has been proposed that we have a ustream.tv party once we reach 10,000, and planning has begun.

Six year NOLS partner YES Prep Public Schools (Youth Engaged in Service) was featured earlier this week in an article about inner-city charter school success. Founded in 1995, YES Prep Public School’s mission is to send every one of their graduates to college.

A blister is your body's way of telling you your boots don't fit, they aren't broken in, or your feet are too tender for the miles you are covering. The body is kind enough to warn you first with "hot spots," and it's a warning you would do well to heed.

"When you talk about leadership today...we don't just need smart leaders anymore. We need people to have a strong moral code, a strong sense of ethics, and a system that will allow them to navigate the difficult challenges they will face in life."

Risk management oversight means consideration of risks from both a systematic and systemic point of view.
Systematic means a crisply linear, cause and effect analysis, which of course is vital. That’s how we recognize that shoulder injury data compiled on river courses reveals the need for better technique instruction on bracing.

Fish eyes are the bubbles rising from the bottom of the pot as water is heated. Some people believe this is hot
enough for reliable disinfection. We disagree.

...Dissolve yeast in warm water with sugar and salt. Add flour and mix to make stiff dough. Oil a fry pan, and spread dough in pan with oiled fingers to form crust. Turn up edges to hold sauce. Pour sauce over crust, and top with cheese and any other toppings. Cover and bake on a stove on low heat until crust is golden brown, about 20 to 25 minutes...

The trucker's hitch is a great thing to have in your quiver of tricks. It's often the first knot we teach students on NOLS courses to use for pitching a tent.
