The Summer Fellowship program is designed for People of Color with a strong interest in a career in outdoor education.
NOLS defines People of Color as individuals who self-identify as ethnically American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, or Multiracial (categories defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Census Bureau).
The eleven-week NOLS Northeast Operations Fellowship program combines one-on-one mentorship, in-town logistical work, and exposure to the operational structure that supports the operations of NOLS field expeditions. For some, this opportunity can provide a structured pathway for People of Color to become expedition instructors. For others, this opportunity may be a pathway for operations and logistics work in outdoor education.
Program Duration: June 5 – August 17, 2018 (11 weeks)
Position Location: New York’s Adirondack Park (town of Gabriels, NY)
Compensation: $340/week plus a reimbursement for travel up to $250
Food and Lodging: Each Fellow will be provided a private bedroom either in a shared house or cabin, and communal use of kitchen and living areas. Meals are provided when students are at the NOLS Northeast campus (about 20% of the tim). Other food is purchased and prepared by the Fellow.
Position Description: Fellows will rotate through the equipment and rations departments, learning the skills needed to support those embarking on extended wilderness expeditions. Fellows will also be exposed to the program, facilities and transportation departments. Throughout the program Fellows will gain the practical experience and institutional knowledge to strengthen their candidacy for a potential instructor course.
PROFESSIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
- Plan and organize food for backcountry rations
- Assist in planning and preparing in-town meals
- Issue and de-issue the necessary gear for courses
- Maintain and repair equipment
- Update map inventory and print maps
- Coordinate NOLS participation in community events
- Create relationships with local organizations working in the outdoors
- Update blog and social media sites
- Participate in the instructor briefing and debriefing process
- Present information to students informally or formally through classes
- Evacuation driving
- Participate in NOLS school meetings and trainings
- Potential to join a course in the field for 1-3 nights
- Self-directed and motivated
- Ability to work well in a dynamic environment and adjust priorities quickly
- Thorough, punctual, and dependable
- Excellent communication and decision-making skills
- Competent with Google Suite technology
- Physically able to bend, stoop, crouch, lift (up to 40 pounds), frequently walk, and stand for extended periods of time.
Motor Vehicle Record: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date, possess a valid driver’s license, have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage. Personal vehicle not required.
Criminal Background Check: A criminal background check is required for all NOLS employees.
E-Verify: NOLS participates in E-Verify. If employed, candidates will be asked to produce evidence that they are eligible for employment in the United States.
