Continuing Education

You can earn continuing medical education credits and education credits towards a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) through your NOLS Wilderness Medicine course, or through the American Camps Association with NOLS Risk Services.

In addition to Continuing Education you can also earn Academic Credit with NOLS.

NOLS Wilderness Medicine is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE), formerly known as the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS).

This service is free to you as a NOLS Wilderness Medicine student. On the first day of the course, you are required to complete the on-course CEU roster with your name, EMT certification number, jurisdiction (i.e., county, state, or national), and expiration date.

Please ensure that CAPCE CEUs will be accepted by your State EMS organization.

CAPCE was established to develop and implement policies to standardize EMS continuing education activities. The cosponsoring organizations of CAPCE are the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, American College of Emergency Physicians, National Association of Emergency Medical Services Physicians, National Association of State Emergency Medical Services Directors, National Council of State Emergency Medical Services Training Coordinators, and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, and National Association of EMS Educators.

 

Physicians and Physician Assistants

Earn CME credit on a NOLS Wilderness Medicine course for professionals

Through joint providership with the Wilderness Medical Society we can offer you 43 hours of category 1 CMEs for participating in the Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals (WUMP) course, 15 hours of category 1 CMEs for participating in the Wilderness Medicine for the Professional Practitioner (WMPP) course, or 15 hours of category 1 CMEs for participating in a Wilderness Medicine Expedition (WME). This service is free to you as our student.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint providership of Wilderness Medical Society and NOLS Wilderness Medicine. The Wilderness Medical Society is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Academy of Physician Assistants accepts Category 1 CME approval from organizations accredited by the ACCME.

Other healthcare professionals should check with their governing entity to determine usefulness of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

The Wilderness Medical Society designates this educational activity for a maximum of 43 hours for the WUMP and 15 hours for the WMPP and WME of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Each physician, physician assistant, or nurse should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Through joint sponsorship with the Wilderness Medical Society, active members of WMS may earn credits from their NOLS Wilderness Medicine course toward the 100 required hours necessary for FAWM recognition as follows:

United States Coast Guard

Our Wilderness First AidWilderness Advanced First Aid, and Wilderness First Responder courses are approved by the United States Coast Guard to satisfy the first aid and CPR training requirements [46 CFR 11.205(e)(1)(i) &46 CFR 11.205(e)(2)(iv)] for a merchant mariner license.

 

 

American Camps Association

NOLS Risk Services offers up to 16 hours of continuing education credit through the American Camps Association (ACA) for participation in a Risk Management Training or the Wilderness Risk Management Conference.
