Justin (aka Doro) grew up between lush tobacco fields and ever-expanding suburbia in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. His passion for wilderness medicine started with his first WAFA course in 2003, and he started teaching for NOLS Wilderness Medicine in 2009. He has worked in the outdoors for over half his life—from rock guiding in North Carolina and West Virginia to backpacking in the Grand Canyon to caving and whitewater canoeing in Georgia. He has a Master's Degree in Outdoor Education from Georgia College & State University. He has also worked as a paramedic in Western North Carolina, sold expensive outdoor gear in downtown Washington DC, and contracted malaria while researching ecotourism in Ghana. He is currently a medical student at the University of New England in Portland, Maine, where he tries to find fleeting time between studying for trail runs, local breweries, and lobster rolls.
