NOLS has been hiking and paddling in Scandinavia for several years now, but on this Alumni trip you can come along on our first foray into full utilization of the well-established hut system along Sweden's National Trail, the Kungsleden.

The Kungsleden is a perpetual favorite of "top hikes in the world" lists no matter whose publication you look at, and with good reason! This trail is a one-of-a-kind walk through a nordic region that few people ever venture into. Gentle terrain with rolling hills and clear trails mean this hike is a reasonable challenge for any fit backpacker.

Staying at the established mountain huts along the trail means that you can keep your pack lighter by ditching tents, heavy sleeping bags, and kitchen setups. Food, layers, and personal gear will still add up to 30 lbs or so, but that isn't too bad for 8 days on the trail!

Fall is a great time to be on the Kungsleden! The summer crowds have thinned out and the tundra is starting to turn colors, creating an unbeatable ambiance. You can expect to see other hikers out enjoying Sweden's favorite hiking trail and mix with mostly Swedes and other Europeans in a communal living environment each evening.

For 8 days and nights you'll enjoy the mysigt (cozy) joy of the backcountry in Sweden. Long conversations, shared meals, and time spent with other NOLSie's will re-acquaint you to expedition life as the instructors handle all the details for the trip to run smoothly.

At the end of the route, you'll have a chance to hike up Sweden's highest peak, Kebnekaise (6,909') before hopping a bus back to Kiruna for a final dinner together as a group.

Overall Difficulty*:

*Your pack is light for a backpacking trip of this length, but mileage is significant every day with no rest days.
