Fall asleep to the sound of the tide on the beach. Wake up at sunrise to read the waves, then pack your sea kayak and start the new day’s journey. On this course for adults, you’ll learn the skills you need to start sea kayaking on your own. A great fit for both experienced kayakers and people new to paddling, you’ll start with the basics and move on to more advanced skills, including navigation, paddle techniques, and rescue. In the evenings, you’ll learn about the area’s ecology as you walk the coast, finding tide pools teeming with life or exploring the shore’s desert plant life. As you travel the Sea of Cortez, you may meet members of local fishing communities and learn more about the area’s culture and history.
You’ll also focus on developing your leadership style in an environment that gives you real opportunities to lead every day. Assessing the changing wind and tides becomes a lesson in decision making. Working through a conflict in your group becomes a chance to practice effective communication. As you travel, you and your group will become a close-knit community that may become a future network of adventure partners. This course is your opportunity to take time away and focus on your own development—skills you can apply to any leadership role you find yourself in.

“I've come back with a better ability to lead, listen and learn. NOLS has taught me to never underestimate what you can learn from someone else. By working together and doing more than our share, we discovered how efficient we can be. By applying that principle to everyday life, I've become a better worker, roommate and friend. ”
