High School Credit

Use your course to earn credit toward graduation

STEP 1. TALK WITH YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR

Schedule a time to talk to your guidance counselor to confirm you can get credit for taking a NOLS course.

Have your guidance counselor contact the NOLS registrar (registrar@nols.edu) and ask about our high school credit program. Your school will determine if credits available through the NOLS curriculum will be accepted.

STEP 2. REGISTER FOR YOUR COURSE

Register for your course, then pay NOLS for your credits on your dashboard. Be sure to print and bring the self evaluation form to your course. You can find approximate costs for different credit types below.* (Not actual costs; information provided only as an example.)

Course Length Credit Available Cost
Two-weeks (13-19 days long) 0.5 Physical Education (PE) $75
Three-weeks (20-25 days long)   0.5 PE & 0.5 Leadership   $150
One month (26 to 59 days)   0.5 PE & 1.0 Leadership  $225
Semester (60 days or longer)*  1.0 PE & 1.0 Leadership $300

*A year-long course is treated as two semesters and can earn 2.0 PE credits and 2.0 leadership credits for double the semester rate.

STEP 3. FILL OUT YOUR EVALUATION DURING THE COURSE

Fill out evaluation and return to one of your instructors on the last day of your course. If you do not fill out the paperwork you will not get credit nor a refund. You will receive two grades

Leadership: Based entirely on your NOLS expedition leadership and expedition behavior grades, with no extra paperwork.

PE: Based on setting goals for PE performance and successfully completing a self-evaluation that reflects on what you learned. PE grade is based on how smartly you set and work towards goals, not on how strong you are.

STEP 4. REQUEST A TRANSCRIPT AFTER YOUR COURSE

One official transcript will be mailed to the address on your credit enrollment form. It will not be sent out until the close of the term in which your course falls. Additional transcripts are available upon communication with the accreditation body. Requests for early report of grades will be accommodated if they are made in advance of your course start date. Contact the NOLS registrar (registrar@nols.edu) with any requests or questions.

If your school requires your NOLS evaluation for credit, fill out the evaluation request form with your school’s mailing address here.

Withdrawals

If you withdraw from high school credit registration before the start of your course, you will be refunded the registration fee minus $25 for processing. If you withdraw before the end of the course, credit may be awarded based on the duration and quality of your participation. Credit for separated students is awarded at the discretion of NOLS staff and instructors. The expense for any high school credit not awarded to a separated student will be refunded, minus a $25 processing fee.

The accrediting body and NOLS are entirely separate entities and no agency or employee relationship exists between them.
