WILDERNESS RISK MANAGEMENT WITH NOLS AND REI

Venture Responsibly into the Outdoors

A lot of work goes into planning and executing a great outdoor adventure. As you go further afield, you need to rely on more than luck to get back home. In this 2-day, classroom-based course, you’ll learn what it takes to venture responsibly into the outdoors (hint: it’s more than first aid skills!).

A NOLS instructor will teach skills and lead activities on trip planning, identifying life-threatening hazards, outdoor leadership and decision-making, emergency response, and how to make the most of post-trip learning opportunities. This course is appropriate for all experience levels, and is especially relevant for outdoor enthusiasts, guides, or trip leaders who may venture beyond the reach of traditional emergency services (places with unreliable cell service, poorly maintained roads… or none at all, etc.)

Course Topics

  • Backcountry trip planning
  • Hazard identification and assessment
  • Outdoor leadership, decision making, and communication
  • Emergency planning
  • Risks unique to solo adventures
  • Working with third party contractors
  • Identifying when a trip requires more formal structures (e.g. waivers, etc.)
  • Risk management considerations for marketing your trip
  • Outdoor skills self assessment
  • Reflection and post-trip learning
