University of Kentucky Leadership Expedition

The University of Kentucky Leadership Expedition is a 7-day, field-based training. On this course, you will travel by foot through some of the wildest country on Earth, exploring a raw, remote and beautiful wilderness that few have ever seen. All the while mastering outdoor living and developing leadership skills. You’ll learn about different ways of life—both the Patagonian culture and the NOLS expedition culture—and, in the process, learn a lot about yourself.

Your expedition will have a strong focus on being an adaptable team member and provide you with opportunities to shift between the roles of “team member” (active follower) and “team leader” (designated leader).

  • You will have the opportunity to exercise individual decision-making while facilitating great teamwork.
  • You will learn and develop both technical wilderness skills and interpersonal skills. The combination will allow you to function effectively as a group in the powerful and dynamic landscape.
  • NOLS instructors will coach you through the course in a way that minimizes stress while focusing on peak performance. Students will also learn and practice backpacking and hiking techniques.
  • Our route will traverse trails, steep hillsides, open steppe, thick vegetation, and river bottoms.

The University of Kentucky Leadership Expedition empowers students to utilize technical and interpersonal skills for effective functionality in the powerful and dynamic natural world; to engage in group performance and master teamwork; to identify and harness lessons that are applicable to the business world; and to develop methodologies for establishing goals, planning, building efficiency, and promoting leadership to foster successful teams in any environment.
