Phil Powers, the executive director of the American Alpine Club and former NOLS instructor presented his essay, “The Practice of Slowing Down”Philonlatokgc_3 last evening on This I Believe. The program is a weekly feature on NPR’s evening news program, All Things Considered.

Phil did a great job elaborating on the way that his mountaineering has influenced his approach to everyday life in Denver where he lives, works, and plays with his son, Gus. He
attributes much of his perspective on life to NOLS founder Paul Petzoldt, particularly mentioning the “rest step”, a Petzoldt technique for conserving energy while climbing.

Congratulations to Phil on his essay and the balance he has been able to achieve in his life!
