NOLS is on the “Best Places to Work” List Because . . .

For the third year in a row, we’ve been listed on Outside magazine’s “Best Places to Work” list. Check out our press release. The full story will be on newsstands in a couple of weeks.

But now for the story behind the story.

Mountain Happy NOLS employees at the annual Ski Wellness Day

We are now playing the waiting game – what is Outside going to say about
NOLS this year? Are they going to talk about the weight room in the
basement again? Are they going to talk about our ski or hot springs
Wellness Days? Will it be a one paragraph deal, or will they
devote a whole page to the wonderiferousness of NOLS?

Here is what my fellow co-workers predict will be in this year’s story about NOLS. Some are serious, some are funny, some are sarcastic and witty. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is which:

  • “the employees feel NOLS gives them the unique opportunity to blend passion with career pursuits.” –DH
  • “its a bunch of outdoorsy people in an outdoorsy place.” –MC
  • “NOLS is hiring during the recession. NOLS is based in Lander, which has a small population.” –KP
  • “Flex-time. Access to Wyoming and the Wind Rivers. A team attitude.” –AJ
  • “Flex-time. We can play in the middle of the day.” –JH
  • “Beer Friday!” –BH (for the record, Beer Fridays are a relic from the days of yore – not currently in practice)
  • “Outside will compliment NOLS on paying extremely high wages.” -KD
  • “It’s a funky fresh workplace with delightful people.” –BE
  • “What a fun place it is to work. How nice the web-site is (they’ll go on and on about that)” –BC (hmm.. I wonder if BC has anything to do with NOLS’ web-site)
  • “It’s a crummy economy but we’re always hiring and always running instructor courses.” –AR
  • “Everybody (full-time, in-town, at HQ) still has their jobs. Staff actually got raises. Flex-time. Job Security. Opportunity to take NOLS courses. Pro-deals. Flexibility with new parents” –AB (AB would actually have gone on and on if I hadn’t left his cubicle)
  • “Flexible Schedules” –KC
  • “Natural light. Comfortable, safe office environment. Competent, great people” –RP
  • “Good support when we have life issues such as illnesses, pregnancies, loss” –DE
  • THIS IS MY FAVORITE! “In 2011, the NOLS Trustees are going to give each employee a new mountain bike — at least a Specialized Stump Jumper or something of equal or higher quality — plus a complementary flask and flask-holder for
    après-bike pursuits.” –AB
