Hybrid Wilderness First Responder Recertification (HWRR)
Recertify Your WFR on Your Schedule – Without Cutting Corners.
Searching for an online WFR recertification? There’s a reason fully online options raise red flags and are not accepted by most employers. Wilderness medicine is a hands-on discipline. You can’t learn to splint a femur fracture, manage an airway, or lead an evacuation from behind a screen.
That’s why NOLS built the Hybrid WFR Recertification: the flexibility of online learning paired with the rigor of hands-on training.
Complete your coursework online at your own pace, then spend two intensive days practicing the skills you may need in the backcountry.
Why Hybrid: Online Learning + Hands-On Training
If you’re searching for a 100% online WFR recertification course, we get it — the ability to be flexible with the time you dedicate to your learning matters.
But a fully online WFR recertification is not something we’d recommend, and here’s why:
- Employers are skeptical. Many outdoor organizations, guide services, and land management agencies do not accept online-only WFR certifications. A certification that isn’t recognized by your employer isn’t worth much.
- Comprehensive training matters. When you’re responsible for patient care in a remote setting, your training has to hold up. Online-only courses leave significant gaps in hands-on competency.
- Retention is the difference. Research shows you retain roughly 75% of what you learn through hands-on practice compared to just 5-10% from reading or watching a screen. Two days of in-person scenarios aren’t optional—they’re what make the training stick.
The NOLS Hybrid WFR Recertification gives you the convenience of studying online with the confidence that comes from practicing with expert instructors.
How It Works
- Online coursework (self-paced): Review wilderness medicine curriculum, complete knowledge checks, and pass a written exam—all before your in-person dates. Study when and where it works for you.
- Hands-on training (2 days): Put your knowledge into practice. Work through realistic patient care scenarios, practice critical skills, and demonstrate competency with NOLS instructors.
What You’ll Earn
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification
- CPR certification
- Epinephrine Auto-injector certification
- 18 EMT Continuing Education hours via CAPCE (additional cost)
