Tanzania Cultural and Service Expedition – 18 to 22 only
Adventure, Culture, and Service in One Unforgettable Expedition
Looking for a wilderness adventure that also offers deep cultural immersion? On this three-week NOLS expedition in Tanzania, you’ll explore remote landscapes, learn Kiswahili, hike alongside Maasai warriors, and engage in meaningful, hands-on service learning. Along the way, you’ll build leadership skills, develop cultural awareness, and grow through powerful real-world experiences. You’ll set out with a group of peers, developing the skills to travel confidently in the wilderness while earning academic credit through a nationally recognized program in outdoor education, leadership, and conservation — fostering transformative growth both in and beyond the classroom.

This course blends outdoor adventure with cultural immersion and community service. In the service section you’ll live with villagers and help with a service project, like building a school building or a bathroom. During the rest of the course you’ll travel through remote regions, including the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, where zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, and lions roam. You’ll learn about Tanzania’s diverse communities — including Maasai, Hadza, Datoga, and Chaga peoples.
Unique Adventure Through Tanzania’s Iconic Landscapes
The course is divided into three sections, emphasizing service, travel, and leadership. You’ll spend time in villages, participating in homestays and working on community-led service projects. Past groups have built school facilities, taught English, and helped cook meals. Living with a local family, you’ll deepen your Kiswahili language skills and build authentic relationships.
Each day combines hands-on learning with the support of instructors who bring deep backcountry experience. More than just teachers, they serve as mentors — challenging, guiding, and encouraging you as you build practical skills in a dynamic, immersive outdoor environment. Whether hiking between villages, practicing Maasai greetings, or facilitating a group decision, you’ll be building confidence and resilience.
One highlight is a day-long safari into Ngorongoro Crater — home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on the planet. You’ll also visit Hadza and Datoga villages to better understand the lives of Tanzania’s nomadic and agricultural communities. Traveling in areas home to large and sometimes dangerous animals like elephants, lions, and buffalo, you’ll learn and practice safety and risk management in real time.
