NOLS Teton Valley Courses Lend a Hand

During the first weeks of summer, a NOLS Adventure Backpacking Course took off into the Palisades Mountain Range of Idaho for two weeks of new challenges. They learned to cook, lead, and live in the backcountry while gaining confidence, new abilities, and a new awareness of the land that they were experiencing; some of which was gained through a six-hour service project repairing trails in Pole Canyon.

Teton Basin Ranger District staff supervised and gave direction while students and their instructors decreased the slope of a switchback and improved drainage systems in the area.

This is just one project reflecting NOLS’ commitment to the Summer of Service Initiative put in place by President Obama and implemented by citizens across the U.S. NOLS Teton Valley has committed to 500 hours of service– each course completing 4-8 hours– which they will likely surpass over the course of 2010 through trail work projects, river corridor work, and employees volunteering with local organizations. Partnering with NOLS Teton Valley in this effort to clean up local trails is the U.S. Forest Service as well as Teton Valley Trails and Pathways.
