Idaho Backpacking Adventure

Independence, responsibility, achievement, and fun—these qualities are the essence of this course. In a word: adventure.

Whether you travel in the Wyoming Range, the Palisades, the Beaverheads, the Beartooths, or the Absarokas, the mountains will be unlike any classroom you’ve ever experienced with their fresh air and fresh opportunities.

You’ll learn skills—backpacking, cooking, camping, and navigation with a map—and you’ll also learn things like how to turn challenging situations into opportunities, how to get along with your group, and how to be a leader even when you’re following.

This isn’t a kid’s version of other NOLS courses. You’ll get the famous NOLS curriculum taught by the same high quality instructors who teach for NOLS in places like Patagonia and Alaska. And, as with every NOLS course, these are entirely field-based experiences where you’ll travel the country on foot and sleep under a blanket of stars.

"I love teaching wilderness courses because of the age group and because the students can take personal responsibility. What we impart to the students in those terms can really be applied to their lives, how to take responsibility for one's actions and how those actions affect others. We show them how they can transfer skills to the front country. During the course, they just get totally jazzed about the skills that they are learning."
