Welcome to NOLS India

Join us for an adventure in the Indian Himalaya, where you’ll immerse yourself in wilderness travel and local culture. On a clear day at our campus in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the Himalaya, including the twin summits of Nanda Devi, and perhaps even the occasional leopard. At NOLS India, our programs are about multidimensional curiosity; our courses package the physical challenges offered by mountain terrain with a window into the culture of Kumaon communities. The Himalaya is inhabited as high as 10,000 feet and sometimes higher. In the field, you’ll learn one or more technical skills--backpacking, mountaineering, or whitewater rafting--in the highest mountain chain in the world. Here, the traditional Indian greeting, namaste, is a word worth knowing and saying properly. Even on your way to the high-altitude glaciers you’ll explore on a mountaineering course, expect to encounter a passerby or two. Backpacking through alpine villages, you’ll have the opportunity to practice your conversational Hindi with community members and learn about their way of life. On a semester course, you’ll participate in a homestay with a local family in addition to developing your backpacking, whitewater rafting, and wilderness medicine skills. On a NOLS India course, your engagement with communities in the Himalaya will frame and inform your wilderness experience.
