Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (HWFR)
Learn online. Train in-person. Certified in 5 days on-site.
The NOLS Hybrid WFR combines flexible online coursework with the hands-on, experiential training that wilderness medicine demands. This hybrid wilderness first responder course is designed for busy professionals and outdoor enthusiasts who need scheduling flexibility without compromising the field-based education that makes NOLS the industry standard.
Complete 30-40 hours of foundational coursework on your own schedule, then join us for 5 intensive days of WFR skills training — half the in-person time of a traditional wilderness first responder course.
What to Expect From Your NOLS Hybrid WFR Course
Phase 1: Online Learning (Self-Paced)
You’ll begin by completing 3 modules of foundational wilderness medicine content on an online platform that includes readings, video instruction, and quizzes. Each module requires 10 to 15 hours to complete, and you’ll need to finish them before the in-person portion begins.
Phase 2: In-Person Skills Intensive (5 Days)
This is where the real learning happens. Apply what you’ve studied through hands-on practice and realistic scenarios in outdoor settings. With foundational knowledge already mastered, every minute of in-person time focuses on firsthand practical skills training and clinical decision-making within a backcountry context. These competencies can only be developed through experiential education.
Upon Completion: Hybrid WFR Certification
Once you have completed all online and in-person coursework and passed the written and practical exams at the conclusion of your course, you will receive your WFR certification. With the knowledge and experience gained through this course, you will be able to conduct a thorough physical exam, obtain a patient history, assess vital signs, provide emergency care in the wilderness, and make crucial evacuation decisions.
Who is the Hybrid WFR for?
If you work or recreate in the outdoors or in other austere environments where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable, acquiring your WFR certification is extremely recommended.
Whether you are a professional guide, trip leader, search and rescue team member, outdoor recreationist, or international traveler, this course is for you.
The NOLS Hybrid WFR is ideal for those who:
- Have limited time off work and can’t commit to 10 consecutive in-person days
- Need flexibility in when and where you complete coursework
- Prefer self-paced learning for academic content
- Want to maximize hands-on training during the in-person portion
- Learn well through independent study combined with instructor-led practice
Why NOLS Doesn’t Offer a Fully Online WFR
If you’re searching for a 100% self-paced, online WFR course, we get it — the ability to be flexible with the time you dedicate to your learning matters.
However, here’s what 35+ years of delivering nationally recognized, industry-standard wilderness medicine education has proven to us: there is no substitute for hands-on, scenario-based training when it comes to patient care in remote environments.
You can’t learn to splint a femur fracture, manage an airway, or lead an evacuation under stress from behind a computer screen. Those skills demand repetition, real-time feedback, and the kind of pressure that only comes from hands-on, scenario-based training.
That’s exactly why a fully online wilderness first responder certification doesn’t exist at NOLS, and it’s why we built something even better. A NOLS HWFR is one of the few fully accepted certifications for a career and competent care in the backcountry for employers.
Same Certification. Same Standards. More Flexibility.
The NOLS Hybrid Wilderness First Responder course gives you the flexibility you want from an online WFR without gutting the experiential training that makes the certification worth earning.
Foundational coursework moves online and on your own time. Then, you show up for intensive in-person field days where you practice patient assessment, patient care in the backcountry, and make critical decisions with expert instructors at your side — the same people who’ve spent careers doing this work in the backcountry.
Upon completion, you’ll earn the same nationally-recognized WFR certification as graduates of our traditional 10-day course. You’ll be fully prepared to conduct patient assessments, provide emergency care, and make evacuation decisions in remote environments.
So, while a fully online wilderness first responder course won’t prepare you for what the backcountry actually throws at you, the NOLS Hybrid WFR meets you halfway, and preserves what matters most: learning by doing, experiencing real-life scenarios, with instructors who have lived this work.
The outdoor portions of training take place regardless of weather, so come prepared for wet, muddy, cold, or hot environments!
