Horsepacking Instructor Course

This Instructor Course will not be running in 2025.


The Horsepacking Instructor Course will be conducted in the Red Desert in Wyoming. This expedition occurs in May which means the bulk of this course will take place in a late winter/spring environment. This includes potential travel through snow, wind, rain, mud, high rivers and variable terrain. NOLS horsepacking instructor-course applicants must have significant experience working with and riding horses. Your Horsepacking Instructor Course will build on the technical outdoor and horsemanship skills you already have as well as fine-tune your teaching skills through an in-depth examination of the NOLS curriculum. This 21-day course includes in-town leadership training, a horsepacking expedition, basic training on teaching lessons and how to build and support inclusive course cultures. Successful completion of this instructor course will prepare you to work wilderness horsepacking courses for NOLS.
