Alaska Executive Leadership Kayak Expedition

This course selects a small group of professionals from the business, government, military and non-profit worlds to participate in a week-long executive sea kayak expedition in Alaska. It is designed for participants to accelerate their leadership capabilities, explore their signature style as leaders and develop tools for driving innovation in dynamic environments.

The foundation of the course is built upon NOLS’ essential expedition skills of effective communication, problem-solving, positive influence, and strategically delivering results. Participants navigate the technical and environmental challenges of field-based learning in the wilderness by getting out of their comfort zones, adapting to a steadily evolving set of scenarios, committing to group over self and learning by collaborating with others.

Participants graduate from the course with transferable skills that will serve them to step forward and lead in their professional career and community.

“The NOLS executive leadership expedition was a fantastic experience. The NOLS Leadership Model isn’t taught in a classroom. Instead, the instructors allow the lessons and language of NOLS to unfold in the very real context of adversity and uncertainty that present, inevitably, in the wilderness setting. “Expedition Behavior” is my new mantra, and it is just as relevant in the workplace as it was on expedition. Do yourself a favor, unplug and recharge for a week, and learn lasting lessons about team dynamics and about yourself as a leader under the care and guidance of the wonderful NOLS instructors.”

John W. Jarvis, Executive Vice President, Hughes Marino
