Hiking France's Burgundy Countryside - Alumni

Over seven days, we will hike across Le Morvan, the heart of Burgundy’s countryside, traveling between villages much like the pilgrims who once followed these historic routes. Beginning in Paris and ending in Dijon, the trip combines iconic French culture with immersive backcountry travel. Along the way, we will stay in a mix of tents, guesthouses, and hotels, experiencing both the simplicity and comfort of life on the trail.

One of the highlights of the trip is exploring Vézelay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of France’s best-preserved medieval villages. Ancient streets, remarkable architecture, and centuries of history provide a fascinating glimpse into Burgundy’s past. As we leave the village behind and venture into the countryside, we discover how deeply human history is intertwined with the surrounding landscape.

No two days on this adventure are alike. One day may be spent wandering through a walled village filled with history, while the next leads through rolling farmland, forests, and small countryside hamlets. Every day offers a different blend of cultural discovery and natural exploration.

The landscapes of Burgundy are among the most beautiful in Europe. Spring transforms the countryside into a mosaic of vibrant greens, while wild poppies paint fields with brilliant shades of red. Hikers share the trails with grazing livestock, abundant wildlife, and panoramic views of an agricultural landscape whose roots stretch back to Celtic times.

What makes this trip truly special is the depth of its connection to the place. Burgundy has long served as a crossroads of culture, trade, and pilgrimage, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of art, architecture, and tradition. At the same time, it remains one of Europe’s most enduring pastoral landscapes, where farmers continue to balance productivity with stewardship of the land. This is more than a hiking trip; it is an opportunity to experience the living history, culture, and natural beauty of rural France.
