Salmon River Rafting – Adult

Salmon River Rafting – Adult

The Salmon River cuts through the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness—the largest wilderness area in the Lower 48—carving between rugged mountains and stunning pine forests. This course allows for five full days on the river, traveling by paddle raft and oar rig through dynamic whitewater and calm stretches alike.

You’ll meet in Missoula, MT, where instructors will drive the group to the put-in for orientation. Once on the river, you’ll learn to read whitewater, refine paddling technique, recognize and avoid river hazards, and find good lines through rapids. You’ll also practice the basics of river rescue and develop the skills to plan your own river trips. This isn’t a guided trip—we want you to develop competence to manage the river yourself!

Campsites along the Salmon are a highlight—expect sandy beaches where you can set up camp chairs and tables, and play games as the sun sets. September is one of the best times of year to be on the river. Weather is never predictable and can range from intense sunshine to afternoon thunderstorms, with cool river temperatures. A unique perk of September on the Salmon River is the opportunity to visit a hot spring along the route.

You’ll move through territory shared by moose, golden eagles, gray wolves, osprey, and black bears. There’ll be opportunities to fish for trout, mountain whitefish, and salmon, plus potential day hikes to visit historic homesteads and learn about the surrounding ecosystem.

Whether you’re an experienced rafter or new to the sport, there’s an appropriate challenge here. Sign up alone or bring a friend— one of the best parts of a NOLS course is the focus on community building.
