Alaska Mountaineering – 18 to 22 only
Explore North America’s Mountain Kingdom
Experience transformative growth in the wilds of south-central Alaska through a nationally recognized 30-day NOLS course in outdoor leadership, wilderness skills, and conservation — earning college credit along the way. Journey with peers into the coastal Chugach Range or the vast Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes of the “mountain kingdom of North America.” You’ll create authentic and fun experiences that inspire personal growth and exploration.
In this rugged wilderness you’ll build confidence by mastering hands-on wilderness skills taught by expert instructors. You’ll navigate deep blue crevasses beneath striking white precipices and watch a Northern Harrier soar gracefully overhead. Along the way, you’ll create authentic, rewarding experiences that inspire personal growth and exploration while learning to respect and understand the alpine environment.
Mastering Alpine Skills on Snow and Ice
Most of your course takes place on snow and ice. Early-season trips focus above the snowline, while later expeditions navigate bare ice and rocky moraines before reaching snow-covered glaciers. Depending on conditions, you may attempt summits or traverse vast, windswept icefields. You’ll start with the essentials — snow camping, cooking, and living comfortably in alpine environments — then build on those foundations. As you advance, you’ll develop technical climbing abilities including rope handling, knot-tying, anchor building, rappelling, and managing rope systems on exposed terrain.
Building Leadership, Confidence & Community
Beyond practical skills, the course focuses on leadership — sharpening your communication, risk management, and decision-making as you work with your team through challenging terrain. You’ll build resilience and confidence — qualities that will shape both your mountaineering journey and your future success.
A key part of the experience is creating a strong, supportive community with your peers. Together, you’ll take on challenges that demand smart choices and true collaboration. You’ll come away as a confident mountaineer, equipped with skills in leadership, navigation, and climbing. Along the way, you’ll find room to breathe, reflect, and reconnect with the power of the wilderness. This transformative journey will stay with you long after the course ends — carrying the vast Alaskan sky with you.
