WRMC Presents Risk Management Award to Jay A. Satz

LANDER, Wyo.—The Wilderness Risk Management Conference (WRMC) presented the eighth annual Charles (Reb) Gregg Wilderness Risk Management Award last week in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Jay A. Satz was recognized with this award, which is given to an individual who has made significant contributions in risk management to the fields of outdoor education and adventure profession.

The Charles (Reb) Gregg Award for exceptional leadership, service, and innovation in wilderness risk management recognizes extraordinary contributions to the outdoor education community, adventure and service organizations, and programs and businesses that utilize wild or remote places for their activities. Recipients of the Reb Gregg award have contributed significantly to the practice of wilderness risk management by raising standards of practice, providing valued service to an industry committed to connecting people to the outdoors, and supporting the stewardship of wilderness. 

Satz works as the Senior Director of Partnerships and Innovation for the Northwest Youth Corps, based out of Seattle, Washington. He has been a WRMC steering committee member since 1995 and spent much of his career working for the Student Conservation Association. Satz is also an active board member for The YMCA of Greater Seattle’s Camping and Outdoor Leadership Branch; Washington’s National Parks Fund; and Aerie Backcountry Medicine. With over 35 years of outdoor leadership and risk management experience, he is an expert in both youth programming and conservation service.

Steve Smith, chair of the WRMC Steering Committee said, “Jay has been a tremendous mentor and dear friend to me, through great times and hard times. He has been the voice of reason, the provider of hard feedback when needed, the person willing to eloquently say what everyone was thinking but no one else was willing to say, and ultimately, a champion in this inspiring community of risk management professionals.”

The WRMC was proud to honor Satz at this year’s event for his many contributions to the industry.
