Take Action on the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative

Launched by President Obama and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, the America’s Great Outdoor Initiative set out to gather ideas from citizens across the country over the Spring and Summer, and to use the input to inform a national agenda on enjoying and caring for our open spaces. Through a series of listening sessions sponsored by both federal agencies and non-profit organizations (including NOLS), the administration hoped to find the answers it needed to best restore impacted places, conserve significant public and private lands, and reconnect NOLSies at Leg Lake Cirque people – especially youth – with the outdoors.

The results of these conversations will soon be known. A presidential report on the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative is due on November 15, and it will include not only a compilation of the feedback provided from comments received across the country, but also an action plan for the executive branch as it moves forward with its outdoors agenda.

Numerous non-profit organizations have come together to support the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative and to keep the drumbeat going as the administration moves out of listening mode and into action mode. The America’s Great Outdoors Campaign is spearheading this effort. Their website, www.greatoutdoorsamerica.org, is a great resource for anyone hoping to raise the profile of key issues that have grown out of the Initiative.
