Sharks Leave No Trace In Sinks Canyon
Fifth and Sixth Graders from Lander’s South Elementary (Home
of the Sharks)
joined the Rocky Mountain Interns, our jefe Ann
Schorling, and NOLS Instructor extraordinaire Clair Parrish for an LNT tutorial
in Sinks Canyon last week.
Straight
off the bus we got to the important business of playing a tag-like game illustrating the impacts of humans on a finely tuned ecosystem.
Naturally, the seven principles came up and the students were more than happy to share their tales of impacting. Thankfully, those days seem far behind them (“…but I haven’t done anything like that since, like, the third grade.”).
We discovered how long it takes common items left behind on camping trips to decompose and we discovered how much life exists in a two foot circle to understand why not all flat spaces are good campsites.
Our time together seemed short but both Sharks and NOLSies appreciated the chance to spend time outside and hike around on a beautiful day in Lander.
The interns had a great time teaching LNT and could end up doing more. What are class or activity ideas that have worked for you, our faithful audience? Use the comments section to share.
