Ridgefield Press: Resident Completes Spring Southwest Course

“Jacob Buckanavage, 19, of Ridgefield recently completed a Spring Semester course in the Southwest with the National Outdoor Leadership School.

Buckanavage and his coursemates began their semester hiking in the mountains of Arizona, with all of their gear and 10 days of food on their backs. The students spent the first few days learning basic leadership and wilderness skills, from hanging their food to dealing with blisters.

The group was then met with torrential downpours that lasted nearly a week. When the sun finally began to reemerge, students and instructors alike were soaked, cold and exhausted. With the sunshine came a re-ration and spirits quickly rebounded.”
