NOLS Risk Management Training

It’s the first day of another exciting NOLS Risk Management Training. Over 20 people are taking part in this two day training, which is offered as a pre-conference workshop to the Wilderness Risk Management Conference in Grand Teton National Park! .
We just had a good opening conversation on whether people think it’s tolerable not to have communication devices on their courses. Questions that group members brought up, getting to the heart of the detailed analysis required in these decisions: Will the device work where you are operating? Will it in fact speed up a rescue? Why wouldn’t you carry a communication device? Are your 15-year old students traveling in a populated area where they can get help without a phone, and where they may be just as likely to have the satellite phone stolen?
We are going to discuss these questions in detail in the next stages of the training. They tie into the foundation for our risk management assessment tool: Analyze, Manage, and Inform.
