NOLS Plays Central Role in Rev3 Cowboy Tough Epic Expedition Race

City of CasperLANDER, WYO — Each year, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) puts over 16,000 students to the test in the backcountry. They are challenged and motivated in ways they aren’t in the classroom. And at the end of their course, they are competent backcountry travelers, confident leaders and responsible explorers. They’re just the sort of people who could have an outstanding performance at the upcoming Rev3 Cowboy Tough Wyoming Epic Expedition Race.

Fittingly, NOLS has been involved with making this event, a vision of Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, a reality. NOLS has long been a supporter of safe and fun exploration of wild spaces like those Wyoming has to offer. An adventure that tests the outdoor and leadership skills of contestants is an excellent way to do just that.

Admission and Marketing Director Bruce Palmer, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Director Aaron Bannon, and NOLS instructor Darran Wells have contributed expertise in marketing, Wyoming’s wild spaces and policy, and adventure racing, respectively, to the planning committee.

Governor Mead announced the race this week, giving a preview of such outdoor activities as climbing, paddling, horseback riding, trekking, and much more. The race will revisit much of Wyoming’s history, for example incorporating a handcart element and portions of the Pony Express route. The race, which will be annual, will explore a different region of the state each year, starting with the southwest corner.

After praising the Governor for his vision in pressing for this “signature” event, Palmer said, “this is a wonderful initiative for Wyoming because it showcases our varied, and truly unique, landscapes while promoting the recreational opportunities that exist here.”

In addition to the expedition race, the event will include smaller races and educational opportunities each day. While details are being worked out, NOLS will be assisting with the event planning and execution.
