NOLS in the Washington Post
NOLS is now engaged front and center in public dialogue about world events, with articles published by various NOLSies now appearing in the Washington Post On-Line’s On Leadership page. This page is devoted to exploring the leadership angle of various news topics, be they about government, politics, business, the arts, education, the non-profit
sector, sports and the military.
A few notable NOLSies are among the ranks of experts who take part in this forum.
NOLS Pro Director Rick Rochelle has been a regular panelist for the column for some time, and has published pieces on Congress and heath-care reform, communications devices in the wilderness, and Sara Palin’s leadership style. Now, NOLS Trustee Tori Murden McClure, author of A Pearl in the Storm, the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic and the first American
to ski to the South Pole, has joined the panel as well. As panelists, Rick and Tori have the opportunity to chime in on various questions posted twice a week by the editors of the column.
A few weeks ago, Tori contributed a beautiful article about leadership and rowing across the Atlantic. And now, NOLS Rocky Mountain IC grad Anne Parmenter, an accomplished mountaineer who has climbed Agoncagua, Denali, Mont Blanc, and Everest, among others, has contributed an article about leadership in Himalayan climbing expeditions.
We have now seen several pieces published by NOLS representatives on the On Leadership Page, and we hope to see more. If I were writing for the Post, I would be loath to quote Humphrey Bogart, but since this is a blog, I can’t help but say, “this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship” between NOLS and the Washington Post.
