NOLS Continues to Boost Wyoming Up

NOLS brings more money and jobs to Wyoming.

News 13’s Landon Harrar showed us the numbers from last year and the new opportunities for this year.

NOLS Admission and Marketing Director Bruce Palmer said, “NOLS is an international organization so last year we educated over 26-thousand people and about five thousand of those would have been on NOLS expeditions went through our wilderness medicine training.” NOLS operates internationally and thousands of students took courses.

Aaron Bannon, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Director at NOLS said, “If you look at the outdoor recreation economy and how much traction that’s getting in the state that’s exciting for us because we see outdoor recreation as a good economic driver for the state, helps us diversify our economy.”

Last year a wide variety of students took NOLS courses.

“You can pretty much be any age and take a NOLS course, we have 12-year olds doing NOLS courses that we specifically build for some private schools and last year we had a 72 year old do a NOLS course.”

Palmer stated this year a big emphasis is going to be offering more NOLS semester courses.

“We are really trying to grow our semester program those are courses that range up to 85 days in length, actually 135 days in length and we’ve kind of re-configured the way we’re doing scholarship and so we’re going to be able to pump more money towards semester scholarships will make the program more accessible to more people.”
