Kennesaw State Customizes Risk Management Training

We recently heard from Sandefur Porter, Outdoor Recreation Coordinator at Kennesaw State University, GA about her successful experience bringing a customized Risk Management Training to their staff at the school’s Outdoor Program, Nature Bound. Here is what she had to say:

“Since the training was customized to Nature Bound, our instructor was able to develop an understanding of our program, and make pertinent recommendations to improve our practices.

A week after the training, we met with our legal council. We came into the meeting prepared and with a good understanding of their role, but more importantly we had the right questions to ask. Our legal council was impressed with the level of preparation we brought to that meeting, and now we definitely have their support. The thing I will use the most is the action plan I developed. I’ve already knocked out a bunch of items and now our team is working together on our risk management efforts.

By having our student trip leaders participate increased organizational transparency and their understanding of the decisions and practices of administrative staff. They were able to contribute ideas to our action planning as well. Having an upper-level administrator attend was helpful because she is now working on a college-level communication plan for a crisis in our program. My advice to anyone who is considering building a customized Risk Management Training is to invite as many people as possible who are involved with the program, both administrative and field staff.”
