KDLY/KOVE: NOLS Holds Welcome & Opening Event

In his welcoming address, Lander Mayor, Del McOmie, noted when the founder of the school, Paul Petzoldt, launched the first NOLS courses in the Wind River Mountains, some community members felt uneasy with the influx of students who brought with them certain ‘hippy’ hair styles and nontraditional western dress.

McOmie affirmed the big turning point of community understanding and appreciation came when fire engulfed the historic Fremont Hotel, now the Central Bank and Trust location at 3rd and Main. NOLS students ascended to the top of the building, repelling at times to assist in the rescue of guests, at the risk of their own lives.”
