Help Save MORE of the Wyoming Range!
Guess what? The Forest Service wants to hear from you!
For the last few years, the Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability department has been working hard on a project to permanently protect lands in the Wyoming Range from oil and gas development.
We won a huge victory in March 2009 when President Obama signed into law The Wyoming Range Legacy Act, now a subtitle of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. However, there are still 44,000 acres located in the greater Horse Creek area along the eastern front of the Wyoming Range that are not protected because they were leased before the bill was signed. NOLS joined a number of other outfitters and conservation groups in protesting these leases.
We have exciting news! The Bridger-Teton National Forest recently released a plan to cancel the 44,000 acres of contested leases! But it’s not a done deal. The Forest Service needs public support to make a final decision.
The land in question is critical to our ability to run courses in the Wyoming Range. Passing the Wyoming Range Legacy Act was a huge step. We can continue the success story on the Wyoming Range by supporting the new Forest Service plan.
We encourage you, as a member of the interested public, to join us in submitting comments to the Forest Supervisor, expressing your thoughts on their plan to cancel the contested leases. Your letter should express your personal perspective rather than that of NOLS – we’ll take care of that. Feel free to share your personal experiences with the Wyoming Range or keep it more general.
For more background information on the Wyoming Range and the history of this campaign check out www.wyomingrange.org or http://www.nols.edu/wyoming_range/.
You can send your letter directly to the Forest Service at either of the addresses listed below. Please do so soon, as the public comment period ends March 22nd!
Thank you for participating in this process!
