Fight Gone Bad
This morning in Lander, the WEMT class is practicing their splinting skills on patients in a scenario involving a Jiu Jitsu session that got a little out of hand. Half our patients simulated suffering a fractured elbow and the other half a fracture to their lower leg. After the students sized up the scene to ensure it was safe (could their be more angry combatants lurking in the tall grass?) they stabilized the patients, assessed them, and treated the injuries.
A good splint is an essential treatment for any suspected fracture because it helps prevent the injury from worsening it may ease the patient’s pain. Here are some other attributes of a good splint:
-It immobilizes the joints above and below bone fractures, or
-It immobilizes the bones above and below joint fractures
-It is rigid, well padded, and adjustable
-It permits access to the fingers or toes for monitoring circulation, sensation, and movement.
Nice work Stuart, Shannan, Mariah, and Peter, and great acting Benson and Jason!
