Decision Making Lecture – Leadership Week Update

On the third day of Leadership Week, Tod Schimelpfenig gave to me, a Leadershot on decision-making!

Today, Tod Schimelpfenig, the accomplished Curriculum Director of WMI, spoke about decision-making during the second Leadershot. In wilderness medicine, Tod reminded the audience that we are “reasoning in the mist of uncertainty.” If all the information about the patient and their condition was there along with plenty of time, then it wouldn’t be wilderness medicine.

We talked about possible hazards that come into play with decision-making and ways to avoid these pitfalls. Many people in the audience agreed when someone pointed out the connection between good decision-making and strong Leadership skills, such as communication, competence, tolerance of uncertainty, and self-awareness.

We also went to check out what the NOLS volunteers were up to at the Lander Care & Share Food Bank this week. People were cleaning windows, painting trim, stocking food, and helping families out to their cars with some heavy boxes of food!
