Climbing Goddess Majka Burhardt Nominated for 2010 Epic Award

In May 2009, a small team of rock climbers departed for Namibia with two goals: to find a way up an unexplored face, and to find a way into a deeper understanding of southern Africa. At the heart of their trip lies the question, can adventure and culture combine to create understanding? “WayPoint Namibia” is the story of their journey.

One of these climbers, who also happens to be the Executive Producer of the film, is Majka Burhardt – writer, guide, and a 1992 NOLS Wind River Wilderness Graduate. Pick up any issue of Climbing Magazine or Rock & Ice, and you’re likely to find Majka somewhere its pages, either conquering a new and unexplored wall or waxing eloquent about a transformative experience. MajkaFinalcrop2010 EPIC Emerging Artist Award is based on web-based voting, so if you are a fan of Majka and her work, go to The White House Project and vote for her film.

I’ve yet to see the film, but the theme — learning through combining adventure with culture — is an echo of what NOLS teaches on its courses, particularly its India and New Zealand courses.

Congratulations Majka!
