15th Annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference

Jackson, Wyo. October 1-3, 2008 – The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Outward Bound, and SCA are hosting the 15th Annual Wilderness Risk Management Conference. Outdoor industry leaders from across the country are attending the WRMC to gain practical risk management skills, network with others in the industry, share field and administrative techniques, and help develop risk management standards for the adventure and education industries.

This year’s WRMC features all of the nation’s most knowledgeable and experienced risk management professionals. Whitewater, climbing, backpacking and mountaineering experts from the leading outdoor education and guide services will all be at the Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton National Park for three days of sharing the lessons learned from another year of outdoor adventures.

“This year’s agenda is packed full of timely and relevant content designed specifically from attendee feedback,” said Tod Schimelpfenig, Chair of the Wilderness Risk Managers Committee. “The conference is organized into tracks on legal issues, program management, judgment and decision-making and crisis/emergency response. One quarter of the topics are new, and the legal track has been intentionally designed to present pertinent topics without redundancy.”

Pre-conference Workshops (Sept 29-30) run the gamut and include: a climbing management clinic; an interactive workshop on how the brain works from a neuro-scientific perspective; a session on how to create a Risk Management Plan; and a WFR recertification. The exciting array of workshops continues throughout the main conference (Oct 1-3), making an experience that will leave participants invigorated and ready to lead the outdoor industry forward.
