Get started by choosing your course type

You can earn college credit through the University of Utah, Western Colorado University or even through your own school for the leadership, environmental studies, risk management, and outdoor skills learned at NOLS.

Choose the type of NOLS course or event you'll be attending from the list to get started. 

NOLS Expedition Courses

    Check for an Existing Relationship

    Check to see if your school already has a relationship with NOLS via direct credits or University of Utah credits.

    Chat with your academic advisor about credit options

    If your school doesn’t already have a relationship with NOLS, schedule a time to talk to an academic advisor at your college. Be sure to bring a University of Utah course list and your NOLS course description. In your meeting, ask about transferring credit from University of Utah or Western Colorado University. You can also ask if you're eligible to receive direct credit from your institution. If your advisor wants to establish a relationship with NOLS, have them reach out to our University Relations Coordinator ([email protected]) to start a conversation.

    Once you know what type of credit that your college will accept, follow the steps below. If you are planning on transferring credits to your school, be sure to ask how the credits will transfer, and what kind of credits your school will count them as.

NOLS Wilderness Medicine Courses

    Talk to your academic advisor

    Schedule a time to talk to an academic advisor at your college about academic credit. Ask about transferring Western State Colorado University or University of Utah credit. Your school may have a preference. Please note that if you’re participating through Americorps you must apply for academic credit through Western.

Wilderness Risk Management Conference

    Talk to your academic advisor

    Schedule a time to talk to an academic advisor at your college to confirm you can get credit for attending the Wilderness Risk Management Conference. Ask about transferring University of Utah credit, Western State Colorado University credit, or receiving direct credit from your institution. This is at the discretion of your college, and will be up to you to coordinate. Please note that if you’re participating with Americorps you must get credit through Western.
