Veteran NOLS Employees Work for Carrots and Apples

Sanchowilson Sancho and Wilson. Wilson and Sancho. Mention these two
horses to anyone related to the NOLS horse program at Three Peaks Ranch and it
is enough said. Wilson is 19 years old and has been working for NOLS since
1996 with 140 weeks in the field. Sancho, now 23, began working for NOLS in
1992 and has roughly 175 weeks in the field. If the Three Peaks Ranch staff were to equate these
horses to something, Wilson would be Mr. Rogers, and Sancho would be a
sombrero.

So far this year, Sancho and Wilson have worked two courses.
Most recently, Wilderness Horsepacking (7/20/09), packing students and gear into the Absaroka Range in
northwestern Wyoming.

These two veterans are part of a herd of 70 horses. NOLS
uses them to run horse-packing courses and pack re-rations of food supplies to
courses in the Wind River mountain range. The horses live on the NOLS Three
Peaks Ranch
, in Boulder, Wyoming. While the ranch’s focal point are the horses, it also operates as a classroom for NOLS semester students and
WMI courses.

To learn more about Sancho, Wilson, and all of our horses, you will
have to put on some chaps and saddle up with us next spring/summer!
