Explore Sustainability at NOLS

At NOLS, the entire educational and operational model is based on the environment. NOLS courses venture into unique wild places around the world to learn the skills of leadership, wilderness navigation, wilderness medicine, and risk management, as well as to establish an environmental ethic. As an organization, NOLS transfers that passion for wild places and the environment ethic into the front country. NOLS advocated for the protection of public lands and its outdoor classrooms while also incorporating environmentally-friendly practices into its operations.

Our Commitment

In response to the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the international Paris Climate Accord, NOLS joined the We Are Still In campaign along with thousands of higher education institutions, local governments, businesses and investors, faith communities, and tribal nations. This campaign recommits organizations to their respective climate goals and to supporting collective international action on climate change.

Diversity & Inclusion

In order to sustain access to and an appreciation for wild places, we actively work to include a diversity of people and perspectives in our student, instructor, and staff body. Public lands belong to all of us. It is through shared learning of our natural environment that we establish a love for wild places.
