Gifts Now and Planned Gifts for the Future

You undoubtedly give to NOLS because you believe in the school’s mission, but there are benefits for you in charitable giving, too.

There are many ways you can support NOLS. Read on to see which gift might fit your situation. Click on any of the links to learn more, and please contact us if you want more detailed information. In all cases, we urge you to consult your legal and financial advisors.

Type of gift	Description
Cash Gift	The simplest and most common way to give to NOLS. Cash Gifts (pdf)
Stock	NOLS accepts gifts of private and publically traded stock. Making Stock Gifts to NOLS (pdf) and Closely-held stock (pdf)
Employer Matched	Your employer matches your donation. Matched gifts (pdf)
Securities, Real Estate, Personal Property	Donate a tax-wise gift of appreciated property. Gifts of securities, real estate or personal property (pdf)

Planned Gifts for the Future

There are two main types of planned gifts, life income gifts and bequests. While a bequest is a gift left in your will, life income gifts allow you to donate to NOLS now, but keep or increase the income from your assets.

Type of Gift	Description
Charitable Remainder Trusts	Set aside a portion of your assets as a gift and still maintain your present and future income. Charitable remainder trusts (pdf)
Charitable Gift Annuities	The simplest income gift. Give directly to NOLS, while still receiving an income from that gift. Charitable gift annuities (pdf)
Charitable Lead Trusts	A valuable, and often-overlooked, tool for individuals with large estates. Charitable lead trusts (pdf)
Retirement Plans	Naming NOLS as a beneficiary is a tax-smart way to donate. Retirement plans (pdf)
Life Insurance	A way for donors of modest means to make a major gift to the school. Life Insurance (pdf)

Catherine "CeCe" Sieffert says that the experiences on her NOLS Semester in the Rockies "allowed me to realize and foster my self-confidence and initiative, and, in turn, translate those into teamwork and leadership skills."

Twelve years later, in 2008, CeCe and her husband decided to spend a year traveling through Asia and Africa. Before embarking on her trip, she thought hard about the future and the people and institutions she cared about. "Even though we were only 32, the smart thing to do was write a will," She said. In it, she named NOLS as a beneficiary.

"[My husband and I] are still fairly young, and not terribly wealthy, but I found it important to include NOLS because my course was such a positive experience for me. Were the worst to happen, I want to leave behind a legacy that allows others to have that positive experience also."
