JOB TITLE: Southwest Transportation Manager
 
REPORTS TO: NOLS Southwest Operations Manager
 
JOB OBJECTIVE: Safely drive courses to and from the backcountry, coordinate vehicle maintenance and cleaning, and perform vehicle maintenance and repair, as skills allow. Participate as a member of the NOLS Southwest team in problem solving, operations support, and facilities maintenance.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have excellent driving skills, clean driving record documented through the motor vehicle record check process, and be willing to complete NOLS defensive driver training.
  • Trailer towing experience and mechanical aptitude are required.
  • Must be able to perform periodic heavy lifting, including among other things:  tires, tire chains, vehicle seats, boxes and duffel bags of food (25 - 125 lbs), fuel cases (36 lbs), and backpacks (40 - 60 lbs).
  • Must be organized and attentive to details, and able to work independently.
  • Excellent oral communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work flexible hours is required, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Must have a desire to interact with NOLS students and foster a collaborative and welcoming work environment.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: As a member of the NOLS Southwest team offer and receive timely feedback among team members regarding performance. Responsible for vehicle use and planning, supervising, and coordinating drivers. Brief field faculty on trailhead locations and driving practices. Periodically oversee seasonal interns and fellows when they are doing transportation related tasks.
 
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Purchase and track vehicle related expenses valued at approximately $10,000. Work with operations and program managers to plan the yearly transportation budget. Responsible for safely maintaining a fleet of thirteen or more vehicles (five vans, five crew cab trucks, two SUVs, one bus, four cargo trailers and one canoe trailer). SW transportation manager will use local business accounts, petty cash, and credit cards and be responsible for impeccable receipt management and record keeping.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

40%     Driving:  Drive various fleet trucks, vans and trailers throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, including in remote locations throughout the NOLS Southwest operating seasons. 
 
30%     Vehicle Maintenance:  Maintain the NOLS Southwest fleet in a safe, clean, professional manner:  Perform or schedule regular repair, maintenance and cleaning of vehicles; coordinate maintenance above skill level with               local vehicle repair businesses; maintain positive relationships with those business vendors.
 
15%    Administrative Duties:  Track expenses, and record service and maintenance on all Southwest vehicles. Schedule vehicle use, issue and de-issue vehicles to other drivers. Orient and train new drivers. Teach NOLS                     defensive driving classes to in-town staff and field faculty.
 
15%    Operations Support:  Assist with Southwest operations, including rations, outfitting, evacuations, and program duties. Teach other in-town staff about basic vehicle maintenance and service. Perform other regular facility                clean up, maintenance, and special projects as assigned by the operations manager or program manager.

MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage.
 
WORK LOCATION: NOLS Southwest - Tucson, Arizona. This is approximately a 6-month position. Rustic housing is available on site for a small fee. Kitchen and living areas are communal with other NOLS Southwest in-town staff (and field faculty when on-site). NOLS Southwest provides meals when students are in town.
