JOB TITLE: NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wyss Campus Facility Assistant 

REPORTS TO: Wyss Wilderness Medicine Campus Facility Manager

JOB OBJECTIVE: Work with Facility Manager to implement campus maintenance goals and building projects; provide staff and students with a safe and comfortable working and living environment; provide primary custodial and grounds care.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience with physical plant design and construction preferred.
  • Working knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to operate a skid steer, snow plow, blowers, and chainsaw.
  • Ability to interact comfortably with a variety of people.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs. repeatedly; perform physical work under a variety of conditions indoors and outdoors; climb and work from a ladder, operate a variety of electric shop and landscaping equipment, and be able to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to function independently.
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, able to work without direct supervision, and make initial decisions about emergency situations.
  • Must meet NOLS driving requirements. May be asked to obtain a commercial driver’s license.
  • Willing to train the right applicant regarding qualifications listed herein.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Must be able to manage the day-to-day campus operations and maintenance in the Facility Manager’s absence, including weekends. May be required to provide student briefings, supervision and/or support. Required to independently manage special projects and supervise temporary help. Contributes to facility management problem solving and decision-making. 

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Facility Assistant is expected to understand the scope of the facility budget and requirements of LEED Platinum, and demonstrate good judgment when buying materials, tools, and equipment, or when costing out projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

45%    Keep all plant/facilities working by performing preventative and remedial maintenance, service checks, and safety inspections throughout the campus. Maintain composting toilet systems according to manufacturer instructions.  Ensure compliance with LEED Platinum standards related to electrical systems, water and energy usage, and thermoregulatory systems.

25%    Perform daily custodial tasks in both the Educational Facility and the Student Residences.  Responsible for cleaning the dining, student commons and classrooms; and stocking and cleaning all facility bathrooms. Assess and maintain inventory for campus expendable supplies. Collect and empty trash and compost according to the campus waste management plan.  Monitor recycling systems and make recycling trips, as necessary. Ensure custodial tasks meet enhanced standards as dictated by NOLS and/or relevant government regulations.

15%    Perform outdoor grounds care including snow removal, landscaping, fencing, and mowing. Provide initiative, support and supervision for large-scale campus development projects. 

10%    Provide facility briefings and enforce campus policies with user groups.  Interact with neighbors and the general public.

5%    Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the Facility Manager.

MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license.  Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage.

WORK LOCATION: Wyss Wilderness Medicine Campus, 13 miles south of Lander, WY.  This is a full-time, year-round position.  The work week may include weekends.
