JOB TITLE: NOLS River Base Assistant Manager
REPORTS TO: NOLS River Base Manager
JOB OBJECTIVE: As a key member of the River Base leadership team, provide excellent support to over 340 river students on 28 courses, accounting for 6,100 student days over the course of a 9 month operating season. Supervise NOLS faculty and in town staff in River Base operations towards exceptional student experiences. Orchestrate smooth field, logistical, and facility operations to promote student and staff excellence. Collaborate with NOLS Rocky Mountain to support all semester students operating in Utah. Contribute to an environment that encourages all staff and students to feel relaxed, supported, and focused going into the field.
QUALIFICATIONS: A passion for the NOLS mission. Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, supervisory, facilitation, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Previous supervisory experience and a strong work ethic required.
LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervise NOLS faculty and in-town staff.
FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Manage petty cash and credit card use as necessary. Check writing authority. Manage equipment and rations budgets.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead NOLS River Base operations and contribute to leadership team decision making and base culture.
- Orchestrate and supervise all operations activities – gear, food and vehicle preparation, course drives, and facilities.
- Facilitate growth-oriented training and supervision for in-town staff.
- Directly supervise four to seven operations staff.
- Actively guide and mentor staff in their professional development at NOLS.
- Assist with growth-oriented field course briefing and debriefing as needed.
- Share evacuation coordinator duties by carrying a 24-hour emergency phone during operating season.
- Assist in the management of field evacuations and in-town incidents as needed.
- Assist in the river permit use and acquisition processes.
- Assume or assist with other projects supervised by the program manager.

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage.
COVID-19 VACCINE POLICY: All employees who are not working remotely and who do have regular contact with other employees or students are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless they meet a medical, disability or religion exemption and a reasonable accommodation is approved. Any COVID-19 vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) is an acceptable vaccine for the purpose of this policy. WORK LOCATION AND CONDITIONS: NOLS River Base - Vernal, UT. Position is ¾ time and benefitted. Operating season is from mid-February to late November. On campus housing available for a small fee. Kitchen and common space shared amongst staff. NOLS field or classroom work is possible.
