JOB TITLE: NOLS Patagonia Sea Kayak Program Supervisor

REPORTS TO: NOLS Patagonia Program Manager

JOB OBJECTIVE: Supervise NOLS Patagonia sea kayaking field staff, ensuring program quality and promoting student and field staff satisfaction. Provide instructor teams with curriculum, route, and risk management support. Give feedback, evaluate performance, and mentor career development for field staff. Serve as a link between instructors, NOLS Patagonia, and school-wide departments.

QUALIFICATIONS: We seek a NOLS instructor with Patagonia sea kayaking experience at course leader level, previous experience in program supervision, or significant experience as sea kayak course leader at another location. Must demonstrate an understanding of and passion for the NOLS mission. This position demands excellent English oral and written communication, creative problem-solving, effective team-building, and strong facilitation skills. The ability to work independently and in a team environment is crucial. Must also be able to work flexible and irregular hours, including some holidays.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervise and mentor Patagonia sea kayaking instructors. Serve as a communication link between NOLS administration and field instructors.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Responsible for cash accounting for private services, course logistics, and course emergency money.


60% - Program and Field Staff Supervision

  • Supervise Patagonia sea kayak courses. May also supervise NOLS Custom courses, and Spanish Program courses as skills allow.
  • Provide field staff with clear and comprehensive briefings and debriefings. 
  • Write instructor evaluations in a timely fashion based on NOLS Instructor Qualifications and Performance Expectations and NOLS Accepted Field Practices.
  • Actively guide staff in their career development, including recommending trainings, course work, and personal development. This person may be called upon to provide career/annual talks with field staff.
  • Ensure timely completion of all relevant course paperwork and reports, in accordance with school policies.
  • Travel to off-base section transitions to provide overall leadership for transitions.
  • Provide technical skills training for instructor teams during instructor development briefing time.

30% - Curriculum and Operational Support

  • Participate in an evacuation coordinator rotation and support evacuees while they are in town.
  • Facilitate communication in complex and critical situations. This includes communication with emergency contacts and family members.
  • Remain current with school policies, position statements, NOLS Current Safety Issues, and NOLS Accepted Field Practices relevant to the courses they supervise.
  • Maintain curriculum files, library, and other resource materials. Develop curriculum resources for sea kayaking courses in Patagonia.
  • Network with other sea kayak program supervisors to exchange ideas and offer support and leadership. Review school-wide sea kayak practices to ensure consistency amongst NOLS programs. Stay abreast of techniques used by other professionals and accepted standards outside of NOLS (eg. BCU, ACA).
  • Work with the education, staffing, risk management, training, admissions, and other departments at the school to enhance service to students and staff.
  • Promote field and in-town risk management.
  • Share responsibility for Patagonia enrollment paperwork revisions, updates, and oversight. 

10% - Other 

  • Assign kayak fleets to courses. Be involved with kayak repair and maintainence, and communicate with the operations manager about the current state of the fleet. Supervise instructor post-course fleet checks.
  • Occasionally assist with course transportation, facility cleaning, vehicle preparation, course rationing, meal preparation. and outfitting as necessary to maintain excellent student service.
  • Assist administration with operating plans, new course proposals, staffing configurations, and operational logistics.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned by NOLS Patagonia program manager.
  • May be required to act as a field instructor in the case of injury/illness and possible unavailability of field staff. Must maintain active instructor status.

MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage. 

WORK LOCATION AND CONDITIONS: Work location is the NOLS Patagonia headquarters in Coyhaique, Chile. Housing is available on-site for approximately $40 per week fee and includes food staples. Kitchen and living areas are communal. Ideally,  this position is an eight-month position. Could be a split four-month position (Boreal Fall and Boreal Spring).
