JOB TITLE: NOLS Mexico Assistant Director

REPORTS TO: NOLS Mexico Director

JOB OBJECTIVE: Collaborate with the NOLS Mexico director in administrative duties to oversee daily operations and long-term planning that support excellent programs and efficient resource management for NOLS Mexico. Assume responsibilities as acting director in director’s absence.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be able to communicate verbally in both English and Spanish. Written English communication skills needed. Familiarity with and respect for Mexican culture is necessary. A positive attitude, high degree of motivation, initiative, and strong organizational and decision-making skills are essential. Must have prior experience supervisory experience. Should also have basic Excel spreadsheet and Word processing skills.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: As a member of the NOLS Mexico leadership team, expect to receive and give timely feedback with team members regarding performance. Directly supervise operations departments. Supervise human resources, risk management, program development in primary area of responsibility. Assume role of acting director during director’s absence.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Assist director in designing annual budget of approximately one million dollars in revenue and up to eight hundred thousand in expenses. Ensure spending is in line with budget in areas of direct supervision. Share responsibility for NOLS Mexico properties including land, buildings, vehicles, inventories, etc. Signature authority on all NOLS Mexico bank accounts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • 70% - Mexico Operations Management
    Hire, train, supervise, and support the managers in operations department—rations and kitchen, equipment, and transportation/facilities. Schedule operations support in line with seasonal operating plans and manage logistics for all Mexico courses. Act as evacuation coordinator, carrying emergency phone at scheduled intervals.
  • 15% - Leadership Team Participation
    With director, develop NOLS Mexico vision and supporting actions in alignment with school-wide strategic plans and priorities. Maintain and develop good relationships with NOLS Mexico’s communities.
  • 10% - Finances
    Assist director in constructing annual operating and assets budgets; prepare and supervise staff in monthly accounting tasks.
  • 5% - Miscellaneous
    Share in the responsibility of maintaining safe, clean and efficient facilities. Other duties as assigned by director.

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage.

WORK LOCATION AND CONDITIONS: NOLS Mexico, Bahía Concepción, Baja California Sur. NOLS Mexico assistant director is a ten-month per year, salaried position. NOLS Mexico operating season runs from September to April. During the operating season NOLS Mexico assistant director must live at the NOLS Mexico campus, located on the coast of the Gulf of California 18 miles south of Mulegé, a town of 5,000 inhabitants.
