JOB TITLE: NOLS Associate Director of Operations

REPORTS TO: NOLS Operations Director of Operations

JOB OBJECTIVE: With director of operations provide leadership, structure for team work, and shared service support and vision for:

  • NOLSExpedition Admissions Department.
  • The 14 campuses that execute NOLS’ expeditionary field programs.
  • NOLS Custom Education through which we develop NOLS’ business-to-business relationships and design programs that strengthen teams and advance organizational leadership. 

Operations leadership must ensure effective collaboration among our departments and also across divisions to ensure excellent programs grounded in the NOLS mission. In addition to human teams, the associate director of operations is responsible for budget design, and, for campuses outside the United States, business and labor law compliance, and national financial reporting.

QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment to NOLS’ educational philosophy, mission, and values is foundational. Professional experience in systems design and data management expertise to support success-metric analysis, and provide consistent information management that decrease administrative burden on director-level staff as needed. The associate director of operations must thrive on the challenge of supervision as a transformational capacity-building endeavor. Exceptional communication and facilitation skills evidenced by a record of success in team-building, collaborative problem-solving, and strong public relations is essential. Must be able to apply flexibility and steadfast determination as situationally appropriate while working independently and leading under stress. Experience with both co-located and remote supervision is needed. A track record of facilitating leadership environments that embody equity and inclusion for culturally diverse teams is essential. 

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervises four to seven directors including location directors, Custom Education, and/ or the Expedition Admissions department. If the operations director is unavailable, the associate operations director may serve as acting operations director in the event of an emergency.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Develops and plans operational budgets with school directors, and assists with asset investment priorities.


75% Operations Leadership
Construct information systems and process routines that ensure schoolwide excellence and efficiency. Supervises campus directors to support excellent student outcomes, effective public policy interaction, risk management, staff training and development, budget planning and financial oversight, facilities development, international compliance, and new program development. Must foster collaboration with other departments that support program delivery such as Risk Management, Field Staffing, and Education.
15% Schoolwide Leadership
Builds and maintains relations with other NOLS departments and campuses. Represents Operations on inter-departmental working groups to exchange knowledge, support, and enhance the school’s overall program and mission. Communicates NOLS’ vision and state of the school with staff. Works with other directors to develop and implement schoolwide initiatives.
5% Emergency Support
Responds to field emergencies and other situations including contact with families, land managers, media, and other audiences.

Performs other special projects and duties as assigned by the director of operations.

Motor Vehicle Record: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage. 

WORK LOCATION: This position is based at NOLS Headquarters in Lander, Wyoming or another NOLS campus.
