JOB TITLE: NOLS Alaska Transportation Manager

REPORTS TO: NOLS Alaska Operations Manager

JOB OBJECTIVE: Maintain vehicle fleet and supervise driving staff to ensure safe and reliable transportation for students and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent driving skills and willingness to complete NOLS Defensive Driver training.
  • Experience organizing and leading others, and managing expenses according to a budget.
  • Experience with basic vehicle maintenance and interest in mechanics.
  • Able to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail.
  • Must communicate clearly and build positive working relationships with others.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Experience with basic vehicle maintenance and interest in mechanics.
  • Must have a desire to interact with NOLS students and to live and work in a small community.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Supervise bus drivers. Brief field faculty on trailhead locations and safe loading, unloading, and travel practices, including transportation-specific COVID policies. Coordinate operational and programmatic logistics with other departmental managers. Offer and receive timely feedback within NOLS Alaska management team.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Responsible for managing a fleet of approximately fifteen vehicles and various trailers. Independently keep records on vehicle maintenance.  Manage vehicle maintenance budget of approximately $17,000. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Arrive to work promptly and with a clean, neat appearance.
  • Coordinate vehicle maintenance and cleaning.
  • Plan and schedule vehicle and trailer use. 
  • Perform vehicle maintenance and repair, as skills allow.
  • Use Google docs system to coordinate student and staff transportation according to operations and program departmental needs.
  • Oversee transportation of kayak fleets to and from Whittier, Alaska.
  • Ensure fleet compliance with NOLS policies and USDOT regulations.
  • Ensure that COVID transportation policies are implemented and maintained throughout the season.
  • Teach NOLS Defensive Driving to staff.
  • Supervise driving staff, and maintain a flexible and supportive atmosphere within the transportation team.
  • Meet weekly with the NOLS Alaska manager team.
  • Actively contribute to a positive and healthy community living environment while striving to maintain balance between work and life.

MOTOR VEHICLE RECORD: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver’s license. Must have a clean driving history and be able to meet the criteria for NOLS vehicle insurance coverage.


COVID-19 VACCINE POLICY:  All employees that work at NOLS facilities and who have regular contact with other employees and or students are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by their first day of work, unless they meet a medical, disability or religion exemption and a reasonable accommodation is approved. Any COVID-19 vaccine approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) is an acceptable vaccine for the purpose of this policy. Full vaccination or an approved exemption is a condition of employment for all new employees. Employees that work remotely and do not have contact with other employees and or students are not required to be vaccinated or have an approved exemption.

WORK LOCATION: NOLS Alaska campus in Palmer, Alaska.

WORK CONDITIONS: This is a 4 and ½ month position, starting in April. Private rustic housing is offered on-site. Meals are provided for staff between approximately May 1 and late-August. Additional kitchen and living areas are shared with other NOLS Alaska staff. Employees will be expected to follow COVID in-town mitigation practices at all times. Campus fees apply for staff living on site.
