JOB TITLE: NOLS Pacific Northwest Evacuation Coordinator

REPORTS TO: NOLS Pacific Northwest Assistant Branch Director

JOB OBJECTIVE: The Evacuation Coordinator (EC) is responsible for coordinating all details for calls that come in from the field (medical, non-medical, or logistical requests). In addition, the EC will be responsible for medical and non-medical evacuations that occur in-town. The EC will hold primary responsibility for orchestrating logistical support for evacuees from the field to the physician and returning to their families, with the support of other branch staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: NOLS instructor certification is strongly preferred with an understanding of NOLS PNW operating areas desired. This position demands excellent oral and written communication skills, problem solving, an ability to work independently and a willingness to work flexible and irregular hours. Experience with database and word processing applications is required. WFR certification required. Experience on multiple PNW course types would be helpful.

LEADERSHIP OR SUPERVISORY DUTIES: Communicate with field staff and program supervisors. Facilitate difficult situations with evacuees and parents.

FUNDS AND/OR PROPERTY: Choose logistical plans that most efficiently utilize vehicles and drivers. Monitor evacuation costs and submit evacuation expense reports.


This position requires deliberate thinking and positive interactions with students, parents, instructors, PNW and HQ in-town staff, bush pilots, horse-packers, health-care personnel, and land managers. The person will be an integral part of the NOLS PNW Program team, which is aiming for a positive experience for each student and their family whether or not the student completes their course.

The Evacuation Coordinator (EC) will typically work 40 hours per week, Friday to Tuesday. (Wed and Thu will be days off). While carrying the evacuation cell phone, the EC will remain within a reasonable distance of the branch and be on call 24 hours a day. (Instructors are briefed to call in with non-urgent requests between the hours of 7am and 7pm.)

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Management of all aspects of course evacuation logistics.
  • Coach instructors during evacuation decisions and course logistic change requests.
  • Advise instructors on student performance issues.
  • Communicate with parents or family members.
  • Manage Incident database and student separation paperwork.
  • Inform Assistant Director and appropriate program supervisor(s) of incoming evacuees.
  • Recommend improvements in administrative systems relating to the EC's job.

Secondary tasks will be assigned based on NOLS PNW needs and the applicant's abilities. These tasks could include supervising field staff with clear and concise briefings, debriefings and timely evaluations; updating curriculum resources; coordinating course logistics; helping with facility maintenance; or assisting operations staff in rations or equipment department.

WORK LOCATION: NOLS Pacific Northwest, Conway, WA

SEASONAL POSITION: June through the middle of August

MOTOR VEHICLE CHECK: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the position start date and possess a valid driver's license and clean driving history.
