Programs operating within large institutions pose a special challenge for Risk Managers. Risk awareness and management techniques within their program may far exceed the risk management culture within the institution as a whole. More often than not, funding, energy, and emotion can be tied up by struggles with institutional administrators. In this situation, Risk Managers must meet the needs of their programs while pushing upwards and outwards to affect the culture of the entire institution.
Three years ago, Dave Baines joined a team that started, from scratch, weaving Risk Management into the operational culture of a small corner of a huge organization. This workshop will be based on the snags and successes faced by this team. It will present a number of strategies that can be used to gain credibility with institutional administrators, to find support for Risk Management initiatives, and to spread Risk Management philosophy into the institutional culture.
Risk Managers from University Outdoor Programs, High School Outdoor Programs, and other’s dealing with a large parent organization will leave this workshop with tangible strategies that they can use to improve their delivery of risk management within the constraints of their institution or even to alter some of the constraints. |
